One of the most important albums in Brazil's prog music. O Terço was, up till then, considered a good rock band by the critics and the public, but not outstanding. With Criaturas da Noite everything changed. Gone were the primitive recordings and the basic rock format. Now the band has a permanent keyboards player (Flávio Venturini) and a new bassist (Sérgio Magrão). With that line up they'd record their best albums ever and would produce some of the best prog rock songs of the 70's Brazilian scene.
Criaturas da Noite showed the many faces of this talented outfit: straight rock songs (Hey Amigo, Volte na Próxima Semana), Folk rock (Queimada, Jogo Das Pedras), symphonic prog (1974, Pano De Fundo, the title track) and even an interesting instrumental tune (Ponto Final). The musicians were very talented and skilled (everybody in the band wrote songs and all the members sang lead and harmony vocals). With no fillers and done with passion and skill, the album was, deservedly, a massive hit at the time. Even the production was superb for a third world country at that period.
Introducing some new elements like the Brazilian viola (a 10 string acoustic guitar, not the classical instrument) to their sound, it gave a Brazilian country feel on some songs, something quite unusual until then. That feature would be further explored in their next album, Casa Encantada, but that's another story.

  2. "O Terço was one of the most important Brazilian rock bands of the '70s. Putting together several different styles like gutsy rock & roll, prog rock, folk rock, heavy metal, and funk, the group formed in 1968 continues to survive, and is always centred on guitarist Sérgio Hinds. The group released its first LP in 1970 but had its commercial apex, in 1975 with their third album,“Criaturas da Noite”,which had arrangements by Rogério Duprat and sold 500,000 copies.

O Terço of Sergio Hinds, Flávio Venturini, Sérgio Luis Moreno Magrão created a successful blend of influences that meets in their repertoire surrealist trips like bands; Yes and Pink Floyd, the classic rock of the 50s and 60s and a good dose folk. Still,“Criaturas da Noite” has an undeniable drive and eventually became one of the most revered albums by fans of progressive rock.

The first track on the disc is a blow for striking riff that has little to do with progressive rock. “Hey Amigo” is a traditional hard rock driven by a pulsating bass and reaches its climax within the first two verses of almost boyish simplicity, but which are still sung loudly by fans of the band as a rallying cry. “Hey Amigo” card is an efficient visits, but that in no way sums up everything that's good to hear the work of Sérgio Hinds and band. “Queimada”, the second song on the disc, diverges completely from the weight of “Hey Amigo”. Summarizing is a folk guitars, bass and percussion discreet,“Queimada” is a song that exudes earthy smell and kill every chord. The lyrics are simple such as “Hey Amigo”, but unlike the first track, features a more interesting construction.

Passing the... lilting rock “Pano de Fundo” by gorgeous instrumental “Ponto Final” - first and dizzying glimpse of progressive album - and “Volte na Próxima Semana” - composition approaching almost contradictory way the simplicity of punk rock - “Criaturas da Noite” finally features the song that gives title track. Composed by Luis Carlos Sá in partnership with Flavio Venturini,“Criaturas da Noite” is an exciting tribute to bugs flying around the lights on. A theme a little curious, and that only reinforces the power of compounding, headed by the gorgeous piano Venturini and the arrangements for orchestra maestro Rogério Duprat, to thrill us even talking about insects. Vocalizations well arranged, in this case, form the cornerstone of transition from Part A to Part B music. One of the album's highlights.

After “Jogo das Pedras”, a fast-paced folk rock with a median letter on luck and chance,“Criaturas da Noite” reaches its last track , " 1974 " , one of the most iconic songs of Brazilian progressive rock . With a pretentious arrangement in various movements , and others with some of suggestions contemplative air 1974 is a lysergic trip timbres and textures of guitars and keyboards , adorned by unmistakable vocalizations Venturini , Hinds , Moreno and Magrão . The chaotic conclusion of " 1974 " , with the band claiming the final chord vigorously while synthesizers Flávio Venturini challenge the supremacy with psychedelic sounds of guitar, bass and drums announce the end of the album.

O Terço was to launch , with the same training, the album “Casa Encantada”,and eventually split apart, leaving behind a small discography (at least with the classic formations of the band ), but of unquestionable quality . Even so,“Criaturas da Noite” is an album that stands out the rest of the group's work , which has become an undisputed classic of Brazilian rock worshiped in Brazil and in the world (the album was even released with vocals in English) . It's an album of timeless sound and that is undoubtedly a good representative of a generation of rockers much more interesting musically, than the somewhat overrated Brazil 80's rock.
